Install Wall Sheeting

Installing siding on your pole barn involves attaching wall sheeting and installing windows and doors. This step not only provides structural stability but also adds to the aesthetic appeal and weatherproofing of the building. Here’s a detailed guide to each part of the siding process:

6.1 Install Wall Sheeting

Purpose: Wall sheeting provides the exterior surface of your pole barn, offering protection against weather and adding structural integrity. Common materials include metal, wood, or vinyl.

  1. Prepare Materials and Tools:
    • Ensure you have all the necessary siding materials, fasteners (screws or nails), measuring tape, level, chalk line, saw, and a drill or hammer.
  2. Start at a Corner:
    • Begin at one corner of the building. Align the first sheet of siding with the bottom edge of the skirt board or foundation, ensuring it is level.
  3. Attach the First Sheet:
    • Fasten the sheet to the girts using screws or nails. Place fasteners at regular intervals (typically 12-24 inches) along the girts to ensure the sheeting is secure.
    • Check for level and plumb alignment as you attach the first sheet.
  4. Overlap Subsequent Sheets:
    • Position the next sheet so that it overlaps the first sheet by one ridge or according to the manufacturer’s specifications. This overlap helps prevent water infiltration.
    • Ensure the sheets are aligned properly and secure them to the girts in the same manner as the first sheet.
  5. Work Your Way Around:
    • Continue this process, working your way around the building, sheet by sheet.
    • Regularly check for level and alignment to ensure the sheets are properly installed.
  6. Trim Sheets as Needed:
    • Use a saw or metal shears to trim sheets to fit around openings, edges, and corners.
    • Ensure cuts are straight and edges are smooth to prevent rust and ensure a clean finish.
  7. Seal Edges and Joints:
    • Apply silicone sealant or caulk along the edges and joints of the sheeting to ensure a watertight seal.
    • Pay special attention to corners, the base, and around any openings to prevent leaks.
